;As the society has been confronted with harsh economic conditions, many small-sized, underprivileged br>schools were forced to close down in Eastern Taiwan. Situated within this dismal backdrop, the researchers br>struggle to develop ways to better understand the plight of marginalized communities and experiment br>approaches to respond to the needs of disenfranchised families, particularly within the often neglected tribal br>communities. The current research project, adopting the method of collaborative community-based action br>research, in which the researchers have been traversing out of our comfort zone to work with a Truku br>community, serves as a political endeavor to revitalize the devalued indigenous knowledge. To do so, this br>action-oriented project helps to form a Truku teenagers’ peer group and involves them to renovate a br>run-down house as the space for public dialogue and to forge solidarity. Additionally they will facilitate br>cross-generational dialogues with the elderly through a visual project with a view to rekindle the tribal ties br>and claim legitimacy to the traditional livelihood. Against the welfare mentality, this education research aims br>to deconstruct internalized residues of colonialism, not only in formal schooling but also in everyday lives. br>Side by side with the youth, the researchers will assist them to face the family turmoil and, instead of looking br>down upon and dodging away from them, this jointed effort will shed light on a radical pedagogy of br>homeplace, by examining how discourse of ideal family and individualistic character building contribute to br>the construction and maintenance of systems of colonization and oppression.
