;Assisted reproductive technology has become the heated topic in medical sociology and gender study. With historical analysis of medical documents, participant observations in a medical center, and in-depth interviews of medical personnel and the infertile, this research project investigates the gender logic of the infertility technology development as well as the interaction between technology and human beings. We find that the medical theories of the infertility do help dispel the myth that only females are related with procreation. However, the infertility treatment still reinforces women's roles in reproduction since it is the wives of infertile husbands that have to go through all kinds of treatments. For the relationships between technology and human beings, we find that most interviewees emphasize how infertility technology harms their health, in contrast with the public presentation of the beneficial sides of assisted reproductive technology. The sharp differences of social pressure and body experiences between infertile males and females particularly demonstrate that the impacts of technologies on social lives depend on the original power relationships.
